Summit Spotlight: Tuesday and Wednesday Highlights

The ACSM 2016 Summit is promising to be a fun and very informative fitness conference. This is the 20th anniversary of the summit, and the preconferences alone are worth the trip to beautiful Orlando. On Tuesday, Exercise is Medicine® offered a credential seminar and exam. EIM is bridging the gap between doctors and fitness professional sports, and the credentialing prepares fitness professionals to receive patient referrals from local doctors. Other preconference sessions included exercise programming for older adults, a BOSU certification, the IAWHP presentation of emerging trends in worksite health promotion and more. Besides the preconference sessions, there was still plenty of time to visit Disney Springs for a nice dinner or do some fun Disney shopping! Fitness professionals and students alike are having a great time while taking away valuable information they can use with their clients, classes and, no doubt, to help further their careers.

Also on Tuesday, Petra Kolber, a long-time fitness professional, gave the keynote address on "The Happiness Epidemic" last night, reminding us all that happier people make better choices and that happiness is interval training for life.

On Wednesday, John Jakicic's keynote lecture topic was treating obesity with physical activity lifestyle changes. Sonya Foco presented her recent experiment eating vegan for 30 days, then paleo for 30 days and how it changed her diet habits. The vegan diet worked best for her and her two other volunteers as it lowered their cholesterol, reduced their weight and body fat and all felt better even before the 30 test was completed.

Katie Smith spoke about excessive gestational weight gain and the risk of future chronic disease of the fetus. The noon BOSU Total Body Blast had participants lifting, squatting, doing push-ups and crunching all using a BOSU! Total energy! Finding the perfect athletic shoe is easy according to Matt Werd. He explained several choices including minimalist shoes to help decide which type of shoe is the best choice. At the end of the day, I taught a grounding and calming yoga class bringing participants back to earth after an exciting and informative day.

Looking at the excitement in the attendees' eyes, the 20th ACSM Summit is as magical as Disney. So, wake up each morning, be grateful, learn as much as you can and have a happy day!
