The following is an interview with EIM Credentialed Professional Cori McCorkle. Cori is Research Specialist at the Regenstrief Institute and Indiana University Center for Aging Research.
Why did you decide to pursue a career in exercise science?
I decided to pursue a career in exercise science because I became really frustrated with the costly way most chronic diseases were being treated with prescription medications, instead of physical activity. While I feel that prescription medications do have their place, many people could feel better by simply moving more.
Why did you choose ACSM's Exercise is Medicine® Credential?
One of my mentors highly recommended ACSM and the program offered a workshop I could attend to help me prepare for the exam.
Any advice you would give to someone getting started in exercise science?
There are many avenues to take in this career-be open, make connections in your field, even if it's only closely related, because you never know where it will lead.
What do you like to do in your spare time?
I enjoy running and spending time with family. I have two young children and my husband is a Firefighter Paramedic. Life can be hectic but, as a mom, it's important to take care of yourself too!
