ACSM/ACS Cancer Exercise Trainer (CET) Webinar Information and Outline

To meet candidates' busy lifestyle, ACSM offers convenient webinars that allow candidates to prepare for your ACSM/ACS CET certification exam at home. Learn and study at your own pace during the 6-week webinar series. Single sessions are also available but if you register for the series and miss a class, no worries - audio and PowerPoint presentations are available following each webinar for 6 months!

Webinars are 90 minutes long.

Each individual webinar session is worth 1.5 ACSM CECs and cost is $45 per session.

The entire 6-session series is worth 9.0 ACSM CECs and cost is $240 for all six sessions.

SESSION 1

Cancer 101 - Physiology, Diagnosis and Treatment of Cancer

This session will include:

  • Knowledge, Skills and Abilities (KSAs) for Physiology, Diagnosis, and Treatment of Cancer
  • Data and statistics regarding cancer diagnoses in the United States
  • Cancer biology
  • Cancer diagnosis and treatment
  • Screening for common cancers 

SESSION 2

Clinical, Medical, and Program Administration Considerations for Exercise in cancer survivors

This session will include:

  • Knowledge, Skills and Abilities (KSAs) for Clinical and Medical Considerations and Program Administration, Quality Assurance and Outcome Assessment
  • Symptoms and side effects during cancer treatment
  • Long-term and late effects of cancer treatment
  • Effects of these on physiologic systems relevant to exercise
  • Scope of practice for fitness staff working with survivors
  • Understanding the structure and function of common types of cancer clinical and support settings in order for fitness professionals to interact with other cancer professionals (clinicians, psychologists, cancer centers, support organizations) appropriately 

SESSION 3

Health appraisal and exercise testing for cancer survivors

This session will include:

  • Knowledge, Skills and Abilities (KSAs) for Health Appraisal, Fitness and Clinical Exercise Testing
  • Appropriate health and medical treatment history prior to exercise training in cancer survivors
  • Appropriate exercise testing across the cancer experience (during versus post-treatment)
  • Understanding the effects of cancer diagnosis and treatment on exercise testing approaches and interpretation
  • Relative and absolute contraindications for exercise testing in cancer survivors 

SESSION 4

Cancer diagnosis and treatment and the effects with exercise

This session will include: 

  • Knowledge, Skills and Abilities (KSAs) for Physiology, Diagnosis and Treatment and Safety, Injury Prevention, and Emergency Procedures
  • Effects of exercise on long-term and late effects of cancer diagnosis and treatment
  • Effects of cancer diagnosis and treatment on ability to do common types of exercise
  • Promoting safety and preventing injury among cancer survivors involved in fitness activities 

SESSION 5

Exercise Prescription and Programming for cancer survivors

This session will cover:

  • Knowledge, Skills and Abilities (KSAs) for Exercise Prescription and Programming
  • American Cancer Society guidelines for exercise programming in cancer survivors
  • Risks and benefits of exercise during and post cancer treatment
  • Modifications for exercise programming according to individual response to cancer diagnosis and treatment
  • Recognizing when a cancer survivor should not exercise or should stop exercising 

SESSION 6

Counseling, Nutrition, and Weight Management for cancer survivors

This session will cover:

  • Knowledge, Skills and Abilities (KSAs) for Nutrition and Weight Management and Human Behavior and Counseling
  • Psychosocial and quality of life issues common among cancer survivors
  • Scope of practice for fitness trainers with regard to meeting psychosocial and quality of life issues among cancer survivors
  • Knowledge of, partnering with, and appropriate referral to cancer survivor support organizations
  • Motivating cancer survivors to exercise
  • Nutrition and weight management for cancer survivors

  • Workshop and webinar costs do not include the cost of the exam or study materials.
  • Workshops and webinars are intended for entry to intermediate level participants.
  • Post workshop/webinar study will be required for achieving ACSM certification.
  • Workshop and webinar attendees can earn ACSM CECs for attending; however, these CECs can only be used for existing certifications.
