Session 1

Fundamentals of Exercise Science

This session will examine the 5 components of physical fitness, energy metabolism and exercise prescription. Learn principles of conditioning to include overload, adaptation, steady state, EPOC, warm up/cool down considerations. The anatomy of the cardiovascular and pulmonary systems will be introduced, along with the acute and chronic physiological adaptations of exercise.

At the conclusion of this session, you will be able to do the following:

  • Understand principles of conditioning to include overload, adaptation, steady state, and EPOC.
  • Understand the benefits of a warm up and cool down.
  • Understand the anatomy of the cardiovascular and pulmonary systems and define their functions.
  • Understand acute and chronic physiological adaptations of exercise.
  • Understand energy and substrate metabolism during exercise.

Session 2

Cardiovascular Fitness/Risk & Assessment

This session will identify ACSM's cardiovascular risk factors, stratification algorithms and pre-screening assessments. Classifications of medications will be addressed along with heart rate monitoring methodology, pre-program screening and assessment. Case study samples will be reviewed.

At the conclusion of this session, you will be able to do the following:

  • Understand ACSM cardiovascular risk factor thresholds.
  • Understand ACSM stratification algorithms through use of these risk factor thresholds.
  • Understand and identify classifications of medications and their effects on exercise programming.
  • Understand the ACSM FITT-VPP exercise program components.
  • Identify methods of monitoring aerobic exercise intensity and corresponding mathematical formulas.
  • Understand pre-program screening and assessment and the use of normative data.
  • Identify safe and effective cardiovascular program design through case study samples utilizing ACSM exercise prescription.

Session 3

Kinesiology/Flexibility & Assessment

In this session, you will learn about the study of human movement. This session will familiarize the participant with movement terminology, anatomy, biomechanical principles, and lever classifications. Flexibility training will be discussed and assessment screening will be defined.

At the conclusion of this session, you will be able to do the following:

  • Identify key parts of the human anatomy as it relates to exercise.
  • Understand biomechanical principles and lever classifications.
  • Understand concentric and eccentric muscle contractions.
  • Understand flexibility assessment, pre-screening and the use of normative data.
  • Identify stretches and joint actions for major muscle groups.
  • Understand ACSM exercise prescription for flexibility program design.
  • Identify high-risk stretches.

Session 4

Resistance Training & Assessment

Resistance training for sport and health will be explored. This session will deliver methods of programming design to assist with client's needs, goals and expectations while establishing spotting techniques and safety tips. Learn methods of measuring muscle strength and endurance. A case study sample will be reviewed.

At the conclusion of this session, you will be able to do the following:

  • Define and implement resistance-training terminology.
  • Understand the use of various modalities of resistance training equipment, techniques and program samples.
  • Understand spotting techniques and safety tips as it relates to exercise selections.
  • Understand methods of measuring muscle endurance, strength and the use of normative data.
  • Understand the ACSM exercise prescription for weight training program design.
  • Safely and effectively design a base level weight-training program.

Session 5

Obesity Assessment & Nutrition

The focus of this session is to utilize weight management methods through nationally recognized nutritional guidelines. Advance through mathematical formulas to include BMI, label reading, and nutrient calculations. Modalities of body fat assessment will be explored.

At the conclusion of this session, you will be able to do the following:

  • Identify methods and tools for safe, successful weight loss and management.
  • Understand mathematical formulas to include BMI, label reading, and nutrient calculations.
  • Understand modalities of body fat assessment and the use of normative data.

Session 6

Injuries/Special Populations/Behavior Change

This session analyzes techniques to facilitate behavior change and improve exercise adherence. Specialized topics will be addressed to identify medical emergencies, exercise environmental issues and special populations. Test taking tips will conclude this session.

At the conclusion of this session, you will be able to do the following:

  • Identify benefits and barriers to physical activity.
  • Understand and relay the consequences of inactivity.
  • Understand research based psychological theories of learning, behavior change and counseling.
  • Identify safety concerns and injury prevention procedures.
