What is the best certification for me?

In order to determine the appropriate credential for you, consider the minimum requirements for each level of certification.

ACSM Group Exercise Instructor

  • 18 years of age or older
  • High school diploma or equivalent
  • Adult CPR with AED certification


ACSM Certified Personal Trainer

  • 18 years of age or older
  • High school diploma or equivalent
  • Adult CPR with AED certification


ACSM Certified Exercise Physiologist

  • Bachelor's degree in Exercise Science, Exercise Physiology or Kinesiology from a regionally accredited college or university
  • Adult CPR with AED certification


ACSM Certified Clinical Exercise Physiologist

  • Bachelor's degree in Exercise Science, Exercise Physiology, or Kinesiology from a regionally accredited college or university
  • Practical experience in a clinical exercise program
  • Minimum of 400 hours if a graduate of a CoAES Accredited Program OR
  • Minimum of 500 hours if a graduate of a non-CoAES Accredited Program
  • BLS/ACLS or CPR for the Professional Rescuer Certification


ACSM Registered Clinical Exercise Physiologist

ACSM/NCHPAD Certified Inclusive Fitness Trainer

  • Current ACSM Certification or current NCCA-accredited fitness certifications
  • Current Adult CPR with AED certification


ACSM/ACS Certified Cancer Exercise Specialist 

  • Current ACSM Certification or current NCCA-accredited fitness certifications
  • Current Adult CPR with AED certification
  • Bachelor's degree in any field and 500 hours of experience training older adults or individuals with chronic conditions OR
  • 10,000 hours hours of experience training older adults or individuals with chronic conditions


ACSM/NPAS Physical Activity in Public Health Specialist

  • Bachelor's degree in a health-related field from a regionally accredited college or university OR
  • Bachelor's degree in any subject and 1,200 hours of experience in settings promoting physical activity, healthy lifestyle management, or other health promotion
  • Current Adult CPR with AED certification
