ACSM/ACS Certified Cancer Exercise TrainerSM

Cancer is a disease affecting the lives of millions of people every day. The American College of Sports Medicine (ACSM) in collaboration with the American Cancer Society (ACS) has developed a specialty certification for fitness professionals working with clients who have been cleared by their physician for independent exercise and physical activity. Become an ACSM/ACS Certified Cancer Exercise Trainer (CET), and use your knowledge to develop exercise programs for clients making lifestyle changes caused by cancer and related treatments.

What will I be able to do as an ACSM/ACS Certified Cancer Exercise Trainer?


An ACSM/ACS Certified Cancer Exercise Trainer provides the following services:

  • Designs and administers fitness assessments and exercise programs specific to one's cancer diagnosis, treatment and current recovery status.
  • Utilizes a basic understanding of cancer diagnoses, surgeries, treatments, related symptoms and side-effects of the various therapies.

What qualifications are necessary?

 All of the following requirements must be met:

  • Current ACSM Certification or a current NCCA-accredited, health/fitness-related certification (e.g., ACE, NCSF, NASM, NFPT, NSCA, Cooper Institute, etc.)
    AND
  • Current Adult CPR/AED (with hands-on practical skills component)
    AND
  • Bachelors Degree (in any field) with 500 hours of experience training older adults or individuals with chronic conditions
    OR
  • 10,000 hours of experience training older adults or individuals with chronic conditions

Hours of experience with older adults or individuals with chronic conditions include: exercise testing, exercise prescription, group or individual training, group or individual client education, academic coursework and/or continuing education (relating to older adults or individuals with chronic conditions), internships or observational hours in an oncology setting and/or cancer rehabilitation program.

Are workshops available?

The ACSM/ACS Certified Cancer Exercise Trainer Two-Day Workshop is a blend of classroom lecture and hands-on practicum designed to help prepare you for the certification exam, as well as provide you with exercise testing/training techniques specific to work with this population.

What is required to maintain my certification?

To maintain your CET certification, you will need to accumulate at least 15 CECs/CEUs within a 3-year cycle, maintain CPR certification, and pay the $25 recertification fee.
