ACSM/ACS Certified Cancer Exercise TrainerSM

The American College of Sports Medicine in collaboration with the American Cancer Society (ACSM/ACS) have developed the Certified Cancer Exercise Trainers (CET) certification. A CET designs and administers fitness assessments and exercise programs specific to a client's cancer diagnosis, treatment and current recovery status. The CET will utilize a basic understanding of cancer diagnoses, surgeries, treatments, related symptoms and side-effects of the various therapies.

Requirements to pursue certification:

  • ACSM or NCCA-accredited health/fitness-related certification
  • Adult CPR/AED certified (with hands-on practical skills component)
    AND
  • Bachelor's Degree (in any field) with 500 hours of experience training older adults or individuals with chronic conditions
    OR
  • 10,000 hours of experience training older adults or individuals with chronic conditions

Hours of experience with older adults or individuals with chronic conditions include: exercise testing, exercise prescription, group or individual training, group or individual client education, academic coursework and/or continuing education, internships or observational hours in an oncology setting and/or cancer rehabilitation program.
