ACSM Certified Group Exercise InstructorSM

The ACSM Group Exercise Instructor (GEI) leads safe and effective exercise in group settings or individually. GEIs use a variety of leadership techniques to foster group camaraderie, support, and motivation while enhancing muscular strength, endurance, flexibility, cardiovascular fitness, body composition, and any of the motor skills related to the domains of health-related physical fitness.

All ACSM GEI candidates must be 18 years or older, currently Adult CPR/AED certified (with hands-on practical skills component) and have a high school diploma or the equivalent.

Requirements to pursue certification:

  • Adult CPR/AED certification (with hands-on practical skills component)

The exam content outline is the blueprint for the group exercise instructor certification examination. Every question on the examination is associated with one of the knowledge or skill statements in the outline. This document also provides the percentage of questions within each domain of the examination. This is an important resource to use in preparing for the exam.
