ACSM From Around Field Science Series Open to Students
ACSM’s From Around the Field Science webinar series is designed to provide ACSM students and members an opportunity to learn more about the diverse science our members conduct. Join us for informal discussions with our ACSM members to hear more about what they study, the general research methodology they use, and some of the interesting results their research is generating. In November, Ayland Letsinger, Ph.D., will discuss the widespread issue of physical inactivity and its biological underpinnings. Dr. Letsinger will provide an overview of the biological promoters of physical activity and how wheel-running mice are an effective model to better understand these mechanisms. ACSM Foundation Program & Research Grants — deadline quickly approaching
Now is the time to submit your application for the numerous ACSM Foundation awards available this year to doctoral students, early-career professionals, and EIM-OC campuses. To make the process easier, there is a new applicant portal that features a modernized process in which student researchers can collaborate with their advisors more easily, updated options to save materials during the application process, and a streamlined signature procedure. The foundation’s research grant program began in 1989 and, to date, has awarded over $3.7 million. In 2023, the foundation awarded more than $76,000 to 13 student researchers, early-career investigators, and EIM-OC campuses. The deadline for applications for this year’s ACSM Foundation Program and Research Grants is Nov. 10, 2023, at 11:59 p.m. EST. ACSM releases NEW NYSHSI podcast series: Healthy Youth Sports
Hosted by ACSM’s Eric Utterback, director of the National Youth Sports Health & Safety Institute (NYSHSI), the podcast features a bi-weekly discussion with leading subject matter experts on topics related to youth and adolescent sports, injury prevention, physical activity and health. The first episode released in late October includes Thayne Munce, Ph.D., FACSM, an assistant scientist and director of the Athletic Health & Performance Lab at Sanford Research in Sioux Falls, South Dakota. Dr. Munce’s research focuses on the effects of repetitive head impacts and concussion on brain health in athletes. His work is highlighted by a multi-year study investigating head impact exposure and neurologic function in youth football players. Episodes will be released every other Wednesday and are designed for coaches, administrators, parents and athletes. Listen via Spotify, Apple Podcasts or the NYSHSI website. Applications for ACSM’s Leadership & Diversity Training Program now open
The purpose of ACSM’s Leadership & Diversity Training program (LDTP) is to encourage ACSM members from underrepresented minority groups in the sciences to participate in activities that will lead to increased ACSM service and leadership, enhanced pathways to degree completion and successful mentored experiences. Participation in the program requires ACSM membership and involvement in ACSM meetings (regional and national) and pairs mentors to trainees with funding for trainees to perform the necessary steps to remain involved with ACSM from student membership to ACSM fellowship. View the program benefits, qualifications, and application on the ACSM LDTP website. Mentoring assignments start at the ACSM Annual Meeting and continue throughout the year. Those serving as mentors are also required to attend the ACSM Annual Meeting and must have ACSM fellow status. If you are an ACSM fellow and are interested in serving as a mentor, please complete the LDTP Mentor Volunteer Form. Candidates will be notified of acceptance in March of 2024.
